Payne Reflects on her Time with Litchfield City Council

Litchfield Ward 3 Alderwoman Kassidy Payne's time on the City Council is drawing to a close. She reflected on her seven years on the council with a statement.

"Serving on city council is quite the roller coaster ride. There are ups and downs, goals and victories you get to accomplish as a team and hurdles that you tackle together. It's been my honor to serve the community in this way for the last 7 years, and I'm thankful for all the projects I was able to be a part of during my terms. I love my community and want to see it grow and thrive. It's time to turn over the reigns and I wish my replacement alderperson the best of luck in continuing our ongoing projects and starting new ones. Thank you to everyone who supported me and encouraged me during this time, and I want to give a special thank you to Tonya Flannery who was an amazing mentor and role model for me."

Big Road Work Project Coming to I-55

SPRINGFIELD – The Illinois Department of Transportation announced that a 14-mile patching and resurfacing project on Interstate 55 from Litchfield to the Macoupin/Madison County line begins Monday, April 21. Work is expected to be completed by the end of September. ?

Additionally, ramps for Litchfield (exit 52), Mount Olive (exit 44) and Staunton (exit 41) will be resurfaced. Most of the work is expected to take place between 7 p.m. and 6 a.m. Sunday nights through Friday mornings. Lane closures are expected, and message boards will be used to direct traffic through the work zones. Motorists can expect delays and should allow extra time for trips through this area. Benefits of this project include a smoother driving surface.

To avoid the work area, when feasible, use of alternate routes should be considered. Drivers are urged to pay close attention to changed conditions and signs in the work zones, obey the posted speed limits, refrain from using mobile devices and be alert for workers and equipment.

Montgomery County Animal Control Warden Dismissed After Animal Abuse Charges

Weeks after being charged with aggravated cruelty to animals, Montgomery County Animal Control Warden April Pier is now the former warden.  The Montgomery County Board voted to terminate her this (April 1st) morning.  Pier is set to appear in court next week in connection with the death of a horse who had to be euthanized in East Fork Township.  In a 2014 case, Pier, then April Elliott pleaded guilty after  a sheltie dog was not provided food or water and was not provided sufficient warmth and shelter and died as a result.  County Board Chairman Doug Donaldson notes that Pier appeared to be doing her job well, with Animal Control getting a nod of approval from the Illinois Department of Agriculture.  Last night (3/31), the County Board's Personnel Committee voted to have a human resources firm perform backgrond checks in the future.   The issue will be discussed by the full county board next Tuesday.
